Thermo-mechanical simulation on automotive manufacturing process chain

In the recent decades, CO2 emission reduction request has driven light vehicles development: non-conventional materials have been introduced and actual cars are often a mix of steels, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, composites, etc. The direct consequence is that traditional spotweld technology has to be partially replaced by new joining techniques.

Their mechanical behaviors have to be investigated due to the lack of 'on field' experience regarding the joining process and the mechanical join performance in terms of strength and fatigue life.

Using the numerical approach, complex highly non-linear phenomena can be simulated in order to guarantees structures strength and reliability. One joining technique simulation will be presented as example of numerical methodology of process optimization.
